The year was 2008. A business owner of a co-working space in New York City by the name of Tina Roth Eisenberg began to see the economy struggling, and as a result, her friends that were in creative careers began struggling too. She started to wonder if there was a way that she could gather her creative community together once a month to hear an inspirational speaker and include free coffee and breakfast. Throughout San Antonio’s 300 year history, “migration” and “immigration” have become terms with which San Antonians are very familiar. They are also terms expressed through the art and experience of local contemporary artist, Naomi Wanjiku Gakunga. Born in Kenya, her work speaks of crossing continents & cultures, of gender & empowerment, of the shifting of materials through time, and of migration to & boundaries on shared spaces.

Shade. It is something that San Antonians desperately seek out as respite from the grueling heat and sun. Even those who design multi-story buildings in an urban South Texas environment rely on shade devices to help with solar gain. One common exterior strategy for shading is to use the overhang of the roof, but for a multi-story commercial building this can prove to be a challenge, and vegetation or high-tech glass only goes so far.

A new apartment complex recently opened up in Brooks City Base called The Kennedy, and as you can probably guess, it is named after the revered Kennedy that ran this great country in the mid-century.  Most of those involved in the building design and development were out of Dallas, and the leasing agency is based in Chicago/Austin, but the cool thing about this complex is what the leadership did with the artwork in the public spaces.  They went local!
