San Antonio, a city renowned for its vibrant artistic landscape, is once again poised to host a significant public art installation: CowParade San Antonio 2025. This initiative represents a noteworthy convergence of local artistic expression, civic engagement, and philanthropic endeavor, slated to transform the urban environment with a collection of unique sculptures.
The Herd Is Released

A pivotal precursor to the multi-site exhibition was the "Gallery in the Gardens: CowParade Preview Party," held on Sunday, May 18, 2025, at the Betty Kelso Center within the San Antonio Botanical Gardens. This exclusive event offered an initial glimpse into the artistic breadth of the upcoming public display, featuring an unveiling of 20 completed fiberglass cow sculptures. These works are the product of talented local artists, whose contributions are central to the visual identity of CowParade San Antonio 2025. Attendees, comprising media representatives, leadership from CHRISTUS Children’s Foundation, patient families, and the featured artists themselves, were afforded the distinct opportunity to engage directly with the creators and project sponsors. A further strategic component of this preview was the initial presentation of the official CowParade San Antonio 2025 map, which outlines the planned placement of more than 70 uniquely painted cow sculptures across various public spaces for the enjoyment of both residents and visitors. This event significantly underscored the cultural impact of CowParade and its role in highlighting San Antonio’s vibrant arts community, its public spaces, and its collective commitment to pediatric healthcare.
What is CowParade and Where Did It Come From?
The first CowParade event was in Switzerland in 1998. The CowParade sculptures were modeled after a Swiss dairy cow and designed by a Swiss-born sculptor, Pascal Knapp, who was initially commissioned to create the three most common poses and molds (standing, lying, and grazing).
Globally recognized as the largest and most successful public art event of its kind, CowParade (now based in West Hartford, Connecticut) has manifested in over 100 major cities worldwide, resulting in the creation of more than 5,000 distinct cow sculptures.
San Antonio’s re-engagement with this initiative, following its initial hosting in 2003, signifies its enduring appeal and relevance within the city's cultural narrative. The core objective of CowParade San Antonio 2025 extends beyond artistic display; it aims to produce, exhibit, and subsequently auction these painted sculptures to directly benefit the CHRISTUS Children’s Foundation.
MiSA Selects 3: Some Works That Drew Our Eye
“Goooood Vibes Only” by Mary Carmen

Adorned with a constellation of spots evocative of the “protective eye” motif found across global traditions, the cow becomes more than a sculpture, but transforms into a symbol of hope. The artist weaves together these time-honored symbols to create a visual language that uplifts and protects, offering children at CHRISTUS Children's Foundation a counter-narrative to the fear and uncertainty of illness.
“Cow-lavera de Azucar” by Jennifer Siciliano

Siciliano's work presents a compelling play on "calaveras de azúcar," the iconic sugar skulls deeply embedded in the iconography of Día de los Muertos. Siciliano's artistic choice transforms the bovine form into a vibrant homage to these culturally significant symbols. Traditionally, these sweet, intricately decorated skull-shaped confections are placed on ofrendas—altars—as a heartfelt gesture to honor and remember deceased loved ones. They embody the sweetness of life and embrace death as an intrinsic, celebrated component of the human cyclical journey. The integration of such a potent cultural icon within the CowParade San Antonio context is particularly resonant, connecting the global public art phenomenon with the rich, localized traditions of our city.
“Arte Misa” by Gio DiZurita

Drawing inspiration from the timeless elegance of blue and white Talavera tile, DiZurita infuses her piece with motifs that echo the dual heritage at the heart of her practice as a Mexican-American artist. Iconic chandeliers—recurring emblems in her Dancing with Ghosts series—glow with symbolic resonance, suggesting a luminous connection to the divine. Hummingbirds are found throughout the composition, bridging the realms of humanity and nature. With this project, DiZurita ventures into uncharted stylistic territory, embracing a fresh visual language while remaining rooted in the familiar themes that define her artistic voice.
Who Does CowParade San Antonio 2025 Benefit?

The philanthropic dimension of this project is deeply rooted in the mission of CHRISTUS Children’s Foundation, a venerable institution that has served the South Texas community since 1869. As San Antonio’s first and only freestanding hospital exclusively dedicated to the care of children and expectant women, CHRISTUS Children’s Foundation operates as a faith-based, not-for-profit entity within CHRISTUS Health. It is distinguished by its 180 pediatric specialists, all of whom are affiliated with Baylor College of Medicine.
The realization of such a multifaceted public art and charitable endeavor is intrinsically linked to robust community support. CHRISTUS Children’s Foundation expressed profound gratitude to the CowParade 2025 sponsors, whose generous contributions were instrumental in this impactful initiative and in advancing children’s health care within the community. Key benefactors include the Greg Kowalski Family, CHRISTUS Health, Deacon Recruiting, Half Price Movers, Gamez Law Firm, Community First Health Plans, Sol Cypress Hotel, and Pearl. Their commitment highlights the crucial connection between corporate responsibility, artistic patronage, and the well-being of the community.
